A Message from Unifor National President Jerry Dias:
Today, more than 12 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria and an additional 4 million are registered as refugees in neighbouring countries as they flee their homes to escape violence. Over 300,000 people have risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea this year. More than 2,600 didn't survive the dangerous crossing, including young children whose images are still very present in our minds.
What your union is doing to help
- Unifor, through our Social Justice Fund, and the funds of the National Union, is partnering with a Canadian settlement organization to fund the resettlement of five Syrian families. The estimated cost of each family sponsorship is $30,000.
- Our Social Justice Fund is also making a donation of $160,000 to UNHCR-Canada, the United Nations Refugee Agency. The agency’s “Lifeline Appeal”provides direct assistance toSyrian refugee familiesin Jordan who are most in need. Approximately 84 per cent of refugees live outside of refugee camps and struggle without basics like food, shelter, and water.
What you can do
I am asking Unifor members to consider making a donation to these humanitarian efforts.
Your contributions can be made immediately to Oxfam Canada at:http://oxfam.ca/unifor
Any donations made by Unifor members at the website above before December 31, 2015 will be matched by the Government of Canada and tracked as coming from Unifor members. Your donation can help us make double the impact to families in need.
So far, Oxfam reached more than 1.6 million people affected by the crisis in Syria. Yet every day more people need our help. Together, we can make a difference.
