Toronto – Postmedia’s plan to consolidate newsrooms across Canada is a massive betrayal of trust by the newspaper chain to its readers, Unifor says.
“The state of the news industry in this country – both print and broadcast – demands the immediate attention of the new Liberal government in Ottawa,” said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.
“An informed public is the bedrock of a democratic society. Canada needs a strong news industry to ensure we have that informed public electing our leaders.”

Message From Aldo Santin, President, Unifor Local 191
These are not the best of times in the newspaper industry. The revenue declines of the business have hit us at the Winnipeg Free Press. The result is we continue to see positions remain vacant when people leave. This year alone, 7 members were laid off.
This is not the message I want to send at this time of year but I feel it's important that you hear it as there are rumours going around the building.
Local 191 2015 Post-Secondary Scholarship Winners
The board of Unifor Local 191 is pleased to announce the winners of the 2015 Post-Secondary Scholarship Essay competition: Kaitlin Vitt, Keira Hasenack, and Chelsea Sanders.
The winners were chosen by the Scholarship committee from among several applications based on their essays on the following topic: "A federal election is underway, and some unions have launched their own advocacy campaigns. Explain why you think Unions should play a role in politics/election campaigns, or, why they should stay out of elections and stick to workplace issues."
We're pleased with the interest and the ability to help offset their education costs.
The winners each receive a cheque for $1,250.
Next year, the scholarship amount is being increased to $1,800.

The situation involving carriers at the Winnipeg Free Press has escalated. The Company informed Local 191 on Nov.16 that it is exercising its options under Article 34 of the Unifor 191 Carrier Collective Agreement and is considering contracting out the newspaper/flyer distribution and delivery division of its operation.

Syrian Refugees Need Our Help
A Message from Unifor National President Jerry Dias:
Today, more than 12 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria and an additional 4 million are registered as refugees in neighbouring countries as they flee their homes to escape violence. Over 300,000 people have risked their lives to cross the Mediterranean Sea this year. More than 2,600 didn't survive the dangerous crossing, including young children whose images are still very present in our minds.
Local 191 Post-Secondary Scholarship Competition

The board of Local 191 is pleased to announce that we are continuing to offer three (3) post-secondary scholarships for 2015.
The scholarships, valued at $1,250 each, will be awarded to the writers of the three best essays that answer the question posed by the Local's scholarship committee.
The question for this year is:
